The Rapid City Flood of 1972 was a very detrimental event for those living in the Black Hills and surrounding areas.
History
The Rapid City Flood of 1972 is also known as the Black Hills Flood, as it greatly affected both the hills and Rapid City area. This flood is remembered as one of the most dangerous and damaging floods in the history of the state of South Dakota. The flood took place on June 9, 1972 with rainfall lasting over six hours. This resulted in 15 inches of water overflowing into many properties in Rapid City.
Damage
The flood caused a great amount of damage to the area and its people. The number of people who died from the flood was a whopping 238, with 5 missing. 14 of those deaths were trained professionals. Over 3,000 people were suffered from injuries due to the flood. There was an estimated of 160 million dollars in damage. Over 5,000 cars were demolished and 200 businesses were ruined. Along with that, a total of 1,335 home were completely destroyed, leaving 2,820 homes damaged.
Impact
Due to the flood many renovations have been made to avoid such a detrimental event in the future such as flood plans. Bridges were redesigned to prevent trash getting clogged in case of a flood. The improvements made in technology, communication, and infrastructure since the flood have ensured a safer community for the people.
