The Hotel Alex Johnson
The Alex Johnson Hotel is a historic hotel in Rapid City, South Dakota. The hotel began construction in 1927, and opened its doors for the first time nine months later in 1928. Johnson meant for the hotel to be a “showplace of the west,” to show and share his love for the Black Hills, and to be a tribute to the Native Americans of the area. It combined the beauty of the Black Hills, Lakota people and Germanic heritage, of the immigrants who made South Dakota their home, noticeable in the structure itself within the tutor design and interior decor.
Who Alex Johnson Was
Alex Carlton Johnson, the man the hotel was originally built by and named after. At the time, Johnson was Vice President of the Chicago & North Western Railroad. The railroad itself was chartered in 1859 and was one of the most popular Midwestern railroads when the hotel was being built. The railroad serviced Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming from out of its Chicago based offices.
Claims to Fame for the Hotel Alex Johnson
The one of hotel’s many claims to fame, besides being a historic landmark, is the repeated mention of the hotel in the Alfred Hitchcock movie North by Northwest. The other is the supposed hauntings of the hotel, the ghosts include Alex Johnson himself and The Lady In White. The Lady In White is supposedly a young bride who committed suicide by jumping out of the window of a room on the eighth floor. Some believed it was foul play, yet no one has been charged with her murder, and the ruling of a suicide by police stands. Those who have seen her claim she wanders the halls in a white gown looking for her killer. Both of these ghosts have drawn the attention of camera crews in recent years, specifically for the SyFy Channel’s TV show: Ghost Hunters.
