The beginning of a museum
While visiting the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, one of the attractions on campus is the Geology Museum. The museum was first opened in 1885 with a donation of over 5000 mineral and fossil specimens that formed the foundation of the museum. In 1923 the public floor opens and sees over 4,000 people go through it in the first year, the success of the museum continued in the following years. In 1924 over 8,000 people came through the museum and over 12,000 in 1925.
Today’s museum
The collection has grown over the century since the museum opened and spans over a billion years of geological time. The museum has exhibits ranging from fossils of pre-historical animals to slabs of all different types of minerals. While at the museum people can get a guided tour from a knowledgeable staff or walk through the museum at their own pace and learn as they go.
