POET LLC.
POET is an ethanol-producing company in South Dakota and is one of the largest energy companies in the United States.
POET was founded by Jeff Broin in Scotland, SD in 1986, as a company specializing in producing bioethanol made from crops, especially corn. According to Reuters, POET is the No. 2 U.S. ethanol producer after top maker Archer Daniels Midland Co. The company is currently headquartered in Sioux Falls, SD but operates 27 plants across 7 different states.
Improving the Process?
Ethanol is made mainly from corn purchased from local producers. The corn goes through a process of milling, fermentation, distillation and dehydration. POET introduced its own patented process -- Broin Project X. BPX uses raw starch hydrolysis that converts starch to sugar and then ferments it to ethanol without the use of heat. As a result, POET has been able to increase their ethanol yield from 2.7 gallons per bushel of corn to 3.0. This kind of increase is helping to make ethanol a viable alternative fuel source for the future.
Other POET
Although ethanol is POET's main product, their process also produces Dakota Gold DDGS (distillers dried grains with solubles), Voilà (corn oil), and Inviz (special protein).
More Ahead
In order for the company to produce bioethanol more efficiently and effectively, they have established their own research center. The main goals of this research are to reduce required water use, increase ethanol yield per, and reduce greenhouse gas intensity. However, there is also important ongoing research to produce cellulosic ethanol from grass, wood, and crop residues on a commercial scale.
