Seth Bullock
Seth Bullock is man that lives by his own morale code, an American Legend of the West. He is remembered as an important figure in Deadwood’s history.
Seth Bullock brought law and order to a town filled with outlaws, gamblers, miners where many would take the law into their own hands. To this day the Bullock Hotel still stands on Main Street of Deadwood, and some say Seth is still there keeping an eye on his hotel.
A New Sheriff in Town
In 1874 when gold was found in the Black hills of South Dakota, many people left home and headed to Deadwood to find their fortune. A young and eager man named Seth Bullock decided that he would leave Montana and head to Deadwood to find his fortune as well. He and his partner, Sol Star, opened Deadwood's only hardware store selling equipment for mining.
Deadwood, at the time, was a wild town filled with outlaws, gamblers, and no significant enforcement of law. One day after his arrival in Deadwood, Wild Bill Hickok was shot and killed. This caused the people of Deadwood call for some form of law enforcement. A year after, Bullock was announced as the new Sheriff of Lawrence County. Seth quickly hired deputies and got the town under control. According to the article: Old West Legends-Seth Bullock Finest type of Frontiersman, Seth could "outstare a mad cobra or a rogue elephant”. His stare was so intense that anyone causing trouble would stand down.
Seth's Hotel
In 1894 their hardware store burned to the ground. Not deciding to rebuild the store, Seth decided to build a Hotel in its place. Seth was very involved with designing and building the hotel. In 1896 the Bullock hotel was completed with three floors, 64 rooms, heat and bathrooms on each floor. His Hotel was considered the most luxurious of its time and Deadwood's first hotel. The hotel still stands today. On Sept. 23, 1919, in room 211 of his hotel, Seth died of cancer and is buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery where Wild Bill and Calamity Jane are buried. Stories like Seth’s are important to share because it gives an idea of what Deadwood was like back in the day.
